A Historic Rematch: Oilers and Panthers Clash Again for the Cup
The 2025 Stanley Cup Final has all the ingredients of a classic. On one end, the Florida Panthers, determined to become the NHL’s second repeat champion in six seasons. On the other, the Edmonton Oilers, desperate to break a 35-year curse and reclaim their former glory. What makes this matchup even more intense? It’s the first direct Stanley Cup rematch in 16 years, a rare scenario that has occurred only eleven times in the NHL’s 99-year history under league governance—and just the third immediate rematch in the last 47 years.
History Repeats, With New Stakes
The last time we saw back-to-back finals between two teams was in 2008 and 2009, when the Red Wings and Penguins battled it out in consecutive seasons. Before that? You’d have to go back to 1983 and 1984—when these very Oilers were swept by the Islanders, only to come back and claim the Cup the following year. Edmonton fans are hoping history repeats itself.
The Panthers edged the Oilers in a dramatic 7-game series last season, going up 3-0 before Edmonton roared back with three straight wins. In Game 7, Florida held strong at home, escaping with a narrow 2-1 victory to seal their championship. But this time, home-ice advantage belongs to Edmonton, thanks to finishing the regular season with 101 points, ahead of Florida’s 98.
Road Warriors vs. Fortress Defenders
Playing a potential Game 7 away from home doesn’t seem to rattle the Panthers. They’ve thrived on the road this postseason, posting a 5-game road win streak and an overall 8-2 away record this spring. That includes a commanding 6-1 win over Toronto in Game 7 of the East semifinals and the clincher in Carolina in the conference final.
Meanwhile, the Oilers have built a near-impenetrable wall at Rogers Place, boasting a 6-1 home record, including both wins against the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Final. They’ve also proven resilient on the road, with a 6-3 playoff record away from Alberta.
Two battled-tested, relentlessly-successful teams are set to start the sequel to their historic seven-game series from a year ago, with two possible outcomes: repeat or redemption.

Resilience: A Trait Shared by Both Contenders
This year’s finalists have one thing in common: they’ve both come back from 0-2 deficits in key series. Florida dropped the first two games against Toronto, only to storm back and win in seven. Edmonton followed a similar path against the L.A. Kings, losing the opening two matchups before rattling off four straight wins.
Season Series Edge: Florida
If the regular season is any indication, the Panthers hold the psychological edge. They won both encounters against the Oilers this year. On December 16, Carter Verhaeghe scored late in the third to seal a 6-5 road victory at Rogers Place. Then, on February 27, late third-period goals from Nate Schmidt and Verhaeghe once again lifted Florida, this time to a 4-3 win at home.
Schedule: Stanley Cup Final 2025
The 2025 Stanley Cup Final will begin on Wednesday, June 4 at 6:00 p.m. local time in Edmonton’s Rogers Place. Should the series go the full distance, a decisive Game 7 is scheduled for June 20, once again in Edmonton, where a title-starved crowd will be roaring for their team’s sixth Cup and first since 1990.
